5 Steps To Come Up With An Idea For Your Next Music Video

At some point in your career you probably have caught yourself thinking. “I should make a music video”. You might have even made one. You might have made many! No matter what stage of your career you’re in, when it’s time to create an idea for your music video, 99% of us get stuck for a second. Sometimes for days. Sometimes for weeks. It’s okay, we’ve all been there. But the important thing is that we don’t let these creative roadblocks stop us from creating our music video, which ultimately will helps us promote ourselves and further the reach of our songs. So this article will present you with a few ways to get you inspired and organized when it comes to creating an idea for your video. Here are 5 steps to follow:

1. LISTEN TO THE SONG

Listening to the featured song is the first step towards getting inspired to create your story. Listen to it several times, in its entirety and without distractions. Don’t

try to come up with a story the first time around, just get in the zone.

From the second time on start thinking only of different vibes, colors, environments and settings you imagine the video to take place at. This is the brainstorming stage, so don’t get caught up trying to figure everything out yet. Sketch out some words and concepts you think of, then move on to the next step.

2. WATCH MUSIC VIDEOS AND PICK OUT REFERENCES

One of the most effective ways to learn how to play an instrument is by listening, copying what our favorite artists are doing, and then creating our own version of it. Likewise, the most effective way of creating good music videos is by watching a lot of those. Just tune up to VEVO’s channel on YouTube and you’ll have tons of potential references for your video. Pay attention to textures, story, movements, lighting, and pretty much everything that you could use as material to create your own idea. You’ll see as you’re watching that ideas will naturally flow into your mind. Write them down.

3. THINK OF A NARRATIVE

At this stage you’ll start organizing the concepts you imagine into a concise narrative. All you have to do here is to think of a character and a situation she finds herself in. It can be any situation i.e. a business woman who is tired of her job. Then start including the elements, colors and environments you thought into the narrative. Maybe this is a black and white situation, maybe she’s dressed in chains as a metaphor to a prison, maybe she’s the only one not moving. Just by writing this out many ideas already start crossing my mind, so you get the point. Organize into an introduction scene, a conflict scene (something happens that changes her normal state) and an ending scene (where she stands now, final message).

4. CHOOSE THE LOCATIONS

Once you are done with the script, you’re only half done. That means the location you pick will play a big role in the story, and you must be open to let new ideas come in and be flexible enough to play with what you have. Start out visiting some places that could potentially be used as a set and take pictures. Then imagine how that story you created would fit in those environments and make the appropriate changes.

5. THINK OF OBJECTS AND WHAT TO WEAR

To complement the story think of what the characters would be wearing and other objects that could be used in the scene. A woman bored doing nothing is different from a woman bored eating an apple. These objects might give you an extra dose of inspiration to make your narratives and characters more interesting.

Conclusion:

The aforementioned steps, although simple, have huge potential to evoke creativity and to force us into creating a plan for our process. Whether you’re working with a film production company or by yourself, it’s always important to participate on the creative process of your music video to make sure it reflects your identity and speaks truly to your fans.
