Hey what’s up everyone! The following blog post is a step-by-step guide on how to make your own music video at home. I'll start by telling you how to come up with an idea for the project, then we'll go over all of the equipment and software that's needed. We'll talk about what goes into filming, editing, and getting your finished product ready to be. If you're looking to save time or money this is a great DIY project!
NECESSARY EQUIPMENT
A smartphone or camera kit (with batteries and memory cards), a tripod, and a laptop or other editing device. That’s it, simple and easy. If you wanna get more fancy with lights and stuff, stick around and we’ll talk more about that in a bit.
FINDING THE RIGHT SONG AND COMING UP WITH AN IDEA
The process of shooting a music video at home starts with the development of a creative and simple idea. In order to do that we’ll use 2 resources. First, the song. You’ll pick the song that has to do with the setting you have available for you, but don’t underestimate how many different vibes you can create in your home.
As small or “uninteresting” it might look to you, I’ll hardly find a location that can’t be fully explored and look great on camera. The second resource is the idea development, and for that, we have an entire article written to help you out. So, read this entire post first, and once you’re ready, access it here. GET A LOCATION /BACKGROUND FOR FILMING
Second step is to look for the best location and background, within your home, that you can use for your video. Be open minded about it, and understand that even the most uncommon places, such as an old bathroom or kitchen, might be great options for your video.
The other thing that plays a big role in creativity, is how many different angles you can pick. Don’t think of your scene only horizontally, but how it would look if you were shooting from above, below, or behind an object, such as a glass, a curtain, a plant, etc.
PLAN OUT YOUR VIDEO AND ALL OF THE SHOTS (ANGLES)
Once you’ve brainstormed different options and locations, it’s time to write it all down so you don’t get lost or miss out on a scene while you’re shooting. Trust me, having this written down will make the process much easier, faster and pleasurable.
PICKING SIMPLE ELEMENTS
Sometimes, all you need to make a scene interesting is to incorporate elements that create texture and color.
Some examples of it are smoke, balloons, and different colorful things. Take a look at this awesome video by YCImaging, where he runs his process to turn his home into a music video set, as he uses some of these elements to improve his productions.
LIGHTING
This one is huge. One of the most important things when it comes to filmmaking is lighting. This can literally make or break a video. When you’re looking for a location, make sure you consider how much natural light you have available for you.
Not ceiling lights (that’s awful), but lights coming from a window. If you don’t have any, you’ll definitely want to get a few cheap artificial lights in order to have a decent result.
In the DIY Music Video Workshop, there are several different strategies and pieces of gear you can use to improve your video. So definitely check that out.
EDIT IT IN YOUR COMPUTER OR USE AN APP TO EDIT ON A MOBILE DEVICE
If you’re starting out in editing, you can get free softwares such as iMovie or Windows Movie Maker, or even use editing apps such as Magisto or Wondershare Filmora.
If you’re editing on other platforms such as Final Cut or Premiere, great, you probably already know what you’re doing or you’re on your way there.
If you wanna dive further into editing, check this thing out, as it has a whole section dedicated to final cut and mobile editing.
Conclusion:
The point of this article is to make you understand that you don’t need much knowledge or money to make it happen. It’s important that you use your creativity and the resources available to you, to create interesting audiovisual material for your music.
This should get you started, but if you wanna further your knowledge and truly improve your videos, take a look at this resource with pretty much everything you need to know about creating videos on a budget, even if you have no knowledge at all.
