If you have been following our blog posts, you’ve seen that we’ve touched on different types of music videos, how to create them, and why they are important. If you haven’t, SHAME ON YOU! Just kidding 😏, not kidding, go read them. But anyways, one of the most important of these types, that has the power to skyrocket your music promotion, is the one we’ll be talking about today, Music Documentaries. Music docs can be done by yourself, with the help of a friend or a film crew, but you can’t miss the opportunity to create them. Here’s why:
1. THEY SHOW WHAT'S BEHIND YOUR SONG
A lot of work has been put to create this project and your fans need to see it. From composing, arranging, rehearsing, performing, recording, mixing and mastering, all the way to planning, filming and editing your music video, the entire process behind a song’s creation should be documented and used as promotional material.
2. THEY SHOW YOUR TRUE PERSONALITY
When we are working, we show who we really are, and this format will allow your fans (or future fans) to see that. If you’re like most musicians, your true self comes out when you are in your creative element. Not everyone has the opportunity to see us in that stage and this can expose a whole new layer about our personality and engage people that otherwise could not be interested in us. So definitely don’t miss out on this opportunity to show who you really are.
3. THEY ARE EASY TO CREATE
If you think about it, every day is a documentary about you, your life and your career. So just turn the camera on. Most of us are carrying some type of video recording device with us everywhere we go. If you don’t, the person next to you probably does. So just remember that every material throughout the creative process is important and will be gold when trying to promote your music later on.
4. THEY ARE A SOURCE OF INFORMATION FOR THE FUTURE YOU
Many times it’s easy to get caught up with the present and future, and forget what we did and how we did things in the past. By creating documentaries you can access your old self and check out how you used to do it. When Pat Martino lost part of his memory, he had to “re-learn” how to play his own style just by listening to his recordings. In a sense, we all develop some sort of memory loss throughout the years, and documenting everything is a way to keep track of both our development and our essence as an artist.
Conclusion:
Music documentaries are some of the most personal ways to promote your music. Just turn on your camera or smartphone and film the process. One day you and your fans will be glad you did.
