In this article, we provide you insight into how this newly-coined phrase can help you perceive sound frequencies better and more efficiently when it comes to your DIY music mixing and production.
This YouTube video by Sweetwater dissects this new term as I am going to introduce you to it.
Loudness? Let’s get started.
1) THIS IS A TERM TO DESCRIBE SOUND
Well, more specifically, sound pressure. Mostly loudness is subjectively viewed and weighed (with our own introduced reference points).
2) FUN FACT: THE WEIGHT OF LOUDNESS CANNOT BE DIRECTLY WEIGHED AS CONSTANT
Due to the sensitivity of our ears and subjective frequencies. We however do weigh it; in terms of sones or decibels. This helps us immensely when getting our adjustments and insights across during the post-production stage of a track.
3) VOLUME AND LOUDNESS ARE NOT THE SAME THNGS
Something can be at a high volume and comfortable to listen to whereas, if the loudness is “too loud”, the sound might just end up hurting our brains.
A cleaner track means better sounding sound frequencies.
Be attuned to the loudness of a track you are developing and adjust accordingly. Your audiences will greatly appreciate you for it.
LASTELY,
Understanding loudness will help you and your use of studio time (especially when working with a sound engineer or producer), in the long run. As they say, the more you know, the better.
